Facts about Brighton and Hove

From the Eurovision song contest to delicious vegetarian food, Brighton & Hove is a colourful and exciting place to live. But how well do you really know it? We’ve compiled a list of our favourite facts about Brighton & Hove that you might not know.

  1. Brighton’s seafront bandstand is the oldest in the country. It was built way back in 1884.

  2. Brighton Palace Pier is over 1760 feet long - that’s over 85 miles of planking!

  3. The Sea Life Centre in Brighton is the world’s oldest aquarium - it opened back in 1872 and is currently host to over 3,500 amazing creatures.

  4. Brighton Palace Pier was the most-visited tourist attraction outside of London in 2016. Over 4,650,000 people visited.

  5. Remember when ABBA won the Eurovision song contest? We bet you didn’t know that it was in Brighton! The event was held at the Brighton Dome concert hall in 1974.

  6. In 1980, Brighton became home to the country’s first naturist beach.

  7. It was reported that Adolf Hitler gave his bombers instructions to specifically avoid bombing the Brighton Pavillion during World War 2. He wanted to have it as a holiday home after the invasion.

  8. As well as having the highest concentration of vegetarian restaurants in the UK, there are more eateries in Brighton & Hove than anywhere else in the country! There’s 1 restaurant for every 250 people.

  9. There are over 3,360 listed buildings and structures in Brighton & Hove!
